PSHE & RSHE at St Mary’s Primary School
At St Mary’s, our PSHE curriculum is ambitious, well-sequenced, and progressive, equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills to be happy, healthy, and responsible members of society. It addresses social, moral, spiritual, and cultural issues relevant to children’s lives while fostering our school values and British Values:
- - Democracy

What is PSHE?
PSHE is a planned programme of learning that helps children develop the skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members, and members of society. It promotes confidence, resilience, and responsibility.
What is RSHE?
Relationships and Health Education has been compulsory for primary schools since 2020. While Sex Education is non-statutory, we offer age-appropriate content, including topics like ‘conception’ and ‘human reproduction.’
Key points include:
- Health Education teaches about the ‘changing adolescent body’ and puberty.
- Science covers body parts, growth, and reproduction.
Parents are informed before these lessons and can review materials or withdraw their children from non-statutory Sex Education content.
PSHE Pathways
Our PSHE curriculum progresses through:
- EYFS: Self-regulation, building relationships, managing self.
- Key Stages 1 & 2: Families and relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and the changing body, citizenship, and economic wellbeing.
Topics are revisited to build knowledge progressively, preparing children for the future.
