Sycamore Class - Years 4 and 5
Children in Sycamore Class are 8, 9 and 10 years old. Our class teacher is Mrs Dakeyne for most of the week but, on some Fridays, it will be Mr Chisem. Our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Warriner and Miss Armitage. Mrs Hilton teaches music on Wednesday morning.
Important things to note:
Monday:
Reading journals and reading books must be in school. Spelling challenges are discussed and new ones are set.
Tuesday:
Reading journals and reading books are needed.
Wednesday:
Reading journals and books are needed. Times tables tests this morning.
PE kits needed - it is PE today with Mr Raine
Thursday:
PE kits are needed.
Friday:
Mr Chisem in school today.
Reading in Year 4 and 5
By now, most children can decode text with relative ease and feel they are 'fluent' readers. Often this is not quite the case as there are many different reading skills needed to fully understand (and therefore enjoy) a text.
Below, I have attached our READING VIPERS which we use in class to develop understanding of texts. Each part is as important as the next and should form part of your questions when reading with your child at home. Ideally, a child will read their school book at least three times during the week. Questions can then be asked based on different reading skills:
Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation and Retrieval.
Please do print off the VIPERS to help your questions about the texts.
