Aiming High

Aiming High was established as an independent voluntary management committee to support the development of high quality play opportunities for children and young people at St Mary’s CE Primary School.

The Committee has representation from a number of groups and organisations including parents, school governors, Beavers, Sunbeams private day nursery, out-of-school clubs and holiday club. Its members work in partnership with children and interested groups to develop both facilities and resources to encourage play both within and beyond the curriculum. Members of the group have worked with children from St Mary’s to redesign the quiet area of the playground and have secured funding for activity tables, comprehensive playground markings and a traverse wall from Woolworths Kids First Playground Partnership Project. This has already raised activity levels before, during and after the school day.

Following successful fundraising by Aiming High & the Parents' Association and a grant from the local Round Table, phase I of The Adventure Trail was installed in January 2006. It encourages both cooperative and independent play, with opportunities for the development of teamwork, problem solving and social skills. The equipment is designed to support children’s physical fitness and cognitive development. It is available to children and teachers during the school day to support cross-curricular work and to enhance activity levels. It is also used by non-school groups by prior arrangement.

The Aiming High Committee will continue to work with St Mary’s for the benefit of all children and young people in the area.
